Friday 56 is about ... rats!?

  • Thursday, October 06, 2011

Ah rats. The scum of life. Why would anyone consciously seek them out?

I have no idea, but this was my pick for Friday 56 this week, which is easy-peasy to join.

  • Grab a book, any book.
  • Turn to page 56.
  • Find any sentence that grabs you. (Yes, I cheat sometimes and put a little more than a sentence!)
  • Post it.
  • Add your (url) post in Freda's Voice Linky.

I picked up this book for $1 at a yard sale and I will soon be reading about Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants. Yes, a non-fiction book at last!

Look promising! Check out the summary:

Behold the rat, dirty and disgusting! Robert Sullivan turns the lowly rat into the star of the most perversely intriguing, remarkable, and unexpectedly elegant book of the season.

Thoreau went to Walden Pond to live simply in the wild and contemplate his own place in the world by observing nature. Robert Sullivan went to a disused, garbage-filled little alley in lower Manhattan to contemplate the city and its lesser-known inhabitants—by observing the rat.

And on that note, I wish you a good weekend!

  1. Interesting. While at first glance the book sounds a little disgusting it would probably be a good read. If it delves into the society of rats and the role they play in our society I can see the potential.
