THE EDGE OF NORMAL (St. Martin's Minotaur)
By Carla Norton

Reviewed by Lisa Unger

Maybe it’s Carla Norton’s background as a journalist and a true crime writer, or maybe it’s that she has a deep sense of empathy for her characters – probably it’s both. Whatever the reason, Reeve LeClaire -- the damaged, fascinating, and deeply brave main character of THE EDGE OF NORMAL -- fairly leaps off the page.

Struggling to find her way after she was kidnapped ten years earlier and held captive for four years, 22-year-old Reeve is slowly rebuilding her life. She is in therapy, has finally landed her own San Francisco apartment, and is working as a waitress to pay the bills. For someone who has endured the kind of trauma she has, her recovery, however fragile is admirable. And we feel for her, deeply, as she white-knuckles through therapy with the brilliant and renowned psychiatrist Dr. Lerner and family get-togethers with her loving, but smothering family.

Then another abducted girl is found after being held captive. The news coverage is a painful replay of the horrors Reeve endured. When Dr. Lerner asks Reeve to help young Tilly after her unthinkable ordeal, and then Reeve suddenly loses her job, will it all be too much?

Carla Norton has penned a pulse-pounding thriller. She knows how to slowly ratchet up the suspense until we’re breathlessly turning the pages. Reeve bravely moves outside her carefully structured life to help young Tilly, she unwittingly has put herself in the path of a ruthless predator. He is playing a sick and deadly game, and watching her every move. But Reeve is far tougher than she knows. With crisp prose, deep insight, and a gift for pacing, Carla Norton has brought all her authority and talents to bear in THE EDGE OF NORMAL. It’s a thrilling read that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
