For Book Beginnings:
I often dream of the Dolphin Hotel. [..]
The hotel envelops me. I can feel its pulse, its heat. In dreams, I am part of the hotel.

"Untrendy!" I said out loud.
A waitress gave me a disturbed look.
I took a taxi back to the hotel.
Synopsis of Dance Dance Dance by Haruki Murakami: In this propulsive novel by the author of Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and The Elephant Vanishes, one of the most idiosyncratically brilliant writers at work in any language fuses science fiction, the hard-boiled thriller and white-hot satire into a new element of the literary periodic table.
As he searches for a mysteriously vanished girlfriend, Haruki Murakami's protagonist plunges into a wind tunnel of sexual violence and metaphysical dread in which he collides with call girls; plays chaperone to a lovely teenaged psychic; and receives cryptic instructions from a shabby but oracular Sheep Man. Dance Dance Dance is a tense, poignant, and often hilarious ride through the cultural Cuisinart that is contemporary Japan, a place where everything that is not up for sale is up for grabs.

You know I love Murakami. Here's one I haven't read yet. And a book I rescued from the thrift store for $1. What do you think?
Interesting. Never heard of this author or this book, but sounds like a bargain. Love the combination of genres. Here's my Friday Book Hero
ReplyDeleteOne dollar. Score. I have never read a book by this author and I'm pretty sure I won't read this one but maybe one of his other books. His writing style seems amazing. My Friday Quotes
ReplyDeleteI really like the beginning. Don't care much for the 56. Have fun reading it.
ReplyDeleteThat hotel reminds of the one in the movie Room 408. Kind of creepy. I wouldn't have given this a second glance. That blurb sure grabbed me and I want to meet the characters. Will be adding this to my wish list.

I've been wanting to try this author and the premise sounds interesting. I'm not sure what I think of that 56 but I'd keep reading!
ReplyDeleteJust a few short sentences make you feel part of the hotel too. :-)
ReplyDeleteI added you to the linky. Happy weekend!
I've never read this author but I like the cover and the title of the book - not sure the description grabs me but I do want to try this writer so I'll add it to my list. Hope you enjoy it a lot - can't complain about a "bargain" book:). Here's my Friday meme
ReplyDeleteSigned up! I saw that Rudyard Kipling was the first Nobel winner and I already had Jungle Book on my Classics Club List. Since it takes place in India, one book...3 challenges completed. Now I just got to read it. I hope to get to a Gabriel Garcia Marquez book too.
ReplyDeleteWoot! Welcome, welcome, Tanya. My, you're efficient :) I do a 2-for-1, and you've got a 3-for-1! Watch out for next month's wallpaper calendar .. it's Kipling ... SHHHH...
ReplyDeleteLol, I have to be creatively efficient when I'm a slow as dirt reader and have so many neglected books calling out to me!
ReplyDeleteWe gotta do what we gotta do ;) Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI've read quite a few Murakamis and love him to bits!
ReplyDeleteI didn't let the book go when I saw it! It was stuck among some nonfiction books (maybe someone was hiding it?) If you're looking to read Murakami, I've written a few reviews here: Norwegian Wood, After the Quake (short stories) and Kafka on the Shore. My first read was his Wind Up Bird Chronicles (unreviewed) which got me started ... I've never turned back :)
ReplyDeleteMe too ... I guess I'll see! :)
ReplyDeleteI read Murakami's A Wild Sheep Chase (unreviewed) and loved it - it was the first mention of The Dolphin Hotel, and yes it is creepy as heck! Looking forward to hearing what you think of Murakami's books. I'll get to this one eventually ... am in no rush.
ReplyDeleteCreepily fun! I'm sure I'll like it. haven't met a Murakami I hated :)
ReplyDeleteYep, packs a punch! Murakami has an interesting style. If you get a chance to read him, you'll see what I mean. Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteI'm collecting this series of covers because they all look so cool!
ReplyDeleteDouble whammy! :)
