Oscar-nominated movies based on books (2016)

Can it be, the Oscars is tomorrow? I'm always curious to find out what books become movies and it's especially a thrill to see books come to life in another form. Let's see what movies are based on books for this season. Pretty substantial this year!

The Big Short

Nominations (5): Best picture, Actor in a Supporting Role (Christian Bale), Directing, Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Film Editing

Based on the book:
The Big Short: The Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis *

Why I want to watch it: Christian Bale, especially since he is nominated. Such an amazing actor.

Bridge of Spies

Nominations (6): Best picture, Actor in a Supporting Role (Mark Rylance), Music (Original Score), Production Design,Sound Mixing, Writing (Original Screenplay)

Based on the books: Bridge of Spies by Giles Whittell* and Strangers on a Bridge by James Donovan*

Why I want to watch it: Tom Hanks. I need to watch all Tom Hanks movies!

Brooklyn

Nominations (3): Best picture, Actress in a Leading Role (Saoirse Ronan), Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

Based on the book: Brooklyn by Colm Toibin *

Why I want to watch it: Not particularly, but I'm curious at Saoirse Ronan's return in a movie. I still remember her from Atonement!

The Martian

Nominations (7): Best picture, Actor in a Leading Role (Matt Damon), Visual Effects, Sound Editing, Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Sound Mixing, Production Design

Based on the book: The Martian by Andy Weir *

Why I want to watch it: I'll likely read the book first since so many book bloggers out there have raved about this so much. I'm always a little wary with sci-fi flicks - I generally have a bad run with them. (And Matt Damon is not one of my favourites.)

The Revenant

Nominations (12): Best picture, Actor in a Leading Role (Leonardo DiCaprio), Cinematography, Directing, Actor in a Supporting Role (Tom Hardy), Costume Design,  Sound Editing, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Visual Effects

Based on the book: The Revenant by Michael Punke *

Why I want to watch it: I'm not sure I do want to watch this. Huge predictions that this Leo's year to win. And I've been hearing that this is pretty gruesome to watch. This was all shot in Canada and so I think I've been hearing more about it then I care to. If Leo does win, I know I'd just be too curious not to watch it!

Room

Nominations (4): Best picture, Actress in a Leading Role (Brie Larson), Directing, Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

Based on the book: Room by Emma Donoghue*

Why I want to watch it (or not): Eep. I was really affected by the book so this is another movie I may opt out not to watch. My book review is HERE if you want to read it.

Spotlight

Nominations (6): Best picture, Actor in a Supporting Role (Mark Ruffalo), Actress in a Supporting Role (Rachel McAdams), Directing, Film Editing, Writing (Original Screenplay)

Based on the book: Betrayal: The Crisis in the Catholic Church*

Why I want to watch it (or not): I'm on the fence on this one. I may watch it because it's based on an investigative piece by the Boston Globe about the Catholic Church, which I find quite fascinating.

Carol

Nominations (4): Best Actress in a Leading Role (Cate Blanchett), Best Writing (Adapted screenplay), Best Cinematography, Best Music (Original Score), Best Costume Design,

Based on the book: The Price of Salt: Or Carol by Patricia Highsmith*

Why I want to watch it: Cate Blanchett, oh but of course! However, the book sounds amazing, so I think watching and reading this is a must.

Ready for the Oscars tomorrow? Which movies and who are you rooting for?

  1. I just read this and I feel like we're the only two people who didn't like this. The dialogues are the actual WORST. The characters! The lack of plot! I don't even know where to start. Idk why anyone thinks this is gothic fiction. This isn't gothic. I wish it had been, I almost fell asleep reading this.

  2. Painful reading. I suffered through it. My curiosity got the better of me.
