The Naipaul test: Can you tell an author's sex?

Can you tell based on how something is written whether it is a male of female author? Apparently I can't. VS Naipaul got some flak when he claimed that:

... because of women's "sentimentality, the narrow view of the world". "And inevitably for a woman, she is not a complete master of a house, so that comes over in her writing too," he said.
