Why are these #BannedBooks ?

  • Sunday, September 29, 2013

I came across this infographic at Weldon Owen Publishing and thought it was a nice way of summarizing some of the reasons why these books were banned. Quite enlightening since the country which banned it and the year/s of banning are there too.

For example, Alice in Wonderland (1931) was banned in China because talking animals were inappropriate ("cultural differences"), or that Animal Farm (1945-1990) was banned in the USSR because it criticized communism ("politics").

Sometimes the reasons for banning are pretty obvious, but in a changing world, they seem petty or even ludicrous.

I cringe at the fact that I've read only a handful of these books. But I revel in the fact that I have freedom to read them if I so choose.

What are your thoughts?
