Friday 56 & Book Beginnings: The Night Circus

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Amazon.com: Paperback | Audiobook
Book Depository: Hardback | Paperback

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it, no paper notices plastered on lampposts and billboards. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.
- p. 3

In truth, Chandresh prefers not to know the ingredients, not to understand each technique. He claims such ignorance gives each dish life, makes it more than the sum of its parts.
- p. 56

The first quote just drew me in. What type of circus is this? And the second, I agree with, as I love love love to eat ... but sometimes the mystery of what's utterly delicious needs never to go further than experiencing utter deliciousness.

Having seen this lovely looking book everywhere and hearing so many raves about it, I caved. I needed to see what the hype was about. And I wasn't disappointed. If you like magic, the Night Circus is the perfect book for you. If you like romance, this one fits the bill. If you like getting lost in languid descriptions, go check this out. Go hunt me out if you're disappointed!

Happy weekend everyone!
Synopsis: The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called "Le Cirque des Reves," and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway--a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love--a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands. True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus per-formers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

  9. I was no fan of this book (which I reviewed on my blog on Dec. 17, 2012). Too much description, not enough action (very weak plot), and a silly set up that even the characters admit has no purpose (at 54% of the way through, according to my kindle). It's an "atmosphere" book, and I can see why some people like that, but I'm not one of them.
