#BookmarkMonday, origami and evolution

Bookmark Monday now has its own account on Instagram! Quick, go follow along! I’ll post your bookmarks!

I am also posting a new bookmark of my own ... a cute little origami terrier. I had some leftover Japanese wrapper and made this little cutie out of it! Want to make your own? Here are the instructions, easy peasy!

I’ve started reading Why Evolution is True by Jerry A. Coyne. This is now being read in many schools and universities, and it provides irrefutable scientific evidence of evolutionary biology. So far, it is compelling and fascinating reading. Why wasn’t my biology this interesting in uni? I have started/stopped with this because two of is were reading this ... now it’s my turn!

Do you like origami? How about non-fiction?

#BookmarkMonday: Oddities, #ghoststories, #TimBurton and #Pinoyauthors

It’s been too long since the last Bookmark Monday post. I am really happy a few of you kept posting on your blogs and Instagram while I was basically AWOL. Bookmarks will never go out of style ... or function. The problem with me is that function always trumps form. So many times I am scambling to find something to use a bookmark. I DO like to keep postcards on hand and I kept this one sent in by Pinoy author Catherine Torres (loved both her Sula’s Voyage and Mariposa Gang and Other Stories).

Torres, on the postcard, gives an excerpt of ghost stories and Filipino folklore. Zoom on the photo.
To add even a bit more of eeeee, check out my current Tim Burton read The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories. Odd much? I couldn’t hold back a few chuckles when flipping though this!

Do you like creepy reading? Are you joining any scary reading challenges?

#BookmarkMonday: Unique Aussie Banksia bookmark

I couldn't stop clicking around in the Mods on Pods* Etsy Shop. Everything is made from the Banksia seed pods and look just how beautiful this bookmark is! Banksia grows in the bush of Australia -- so if you're looking for something distinctly Australian, I think you should pay this little shop a visit.

I don't think I could every get tired of Harry Potter. Ukraine company Mere Leather* on Etsy preys upon Potterheads in the nicest possible way with these amazing handmade leather corner bookmarks that any Harry Potter fan would love to own. #BookmarkMonday: Dig me up with some vintage!

Old books, old bookmarks. Used, vintage. I love anything old with a backstory. Here's a lovely little bookmark by the store No Other Book Like This* on Etsy. Look closely and you'll see that this 1800s bookmark looks like a trowel with a faux ivory handle (likely Bakelite).

#BookmarkMonday: Intolerably stupid

It's been a very long time since I featured bookmarks that I don't actually own. I found this bookmark of a quote by Jane Austen too awesome not to share with you all. This bookmark was made by Bookworm Mama Co.* on Etsy.

No mincing of words. Gotta love Jane Austen.

Now I have a weird hankering to watch Sense and Sensibility.

#BookmarkMonday: Picasso + side trip to two art galleries

We recently went to the Winnipeg Art Gallery's Picasso: Man and Beast Exhibit and got a fill of Picasso's wonderful work, particularly his etchings. (I have to say that I was disappointed there were only three paintings.) Naturally a souvenir was called for and this colouring book* was the perfect one - I grabbed a notepad paper there and it's now a bookmark!

Curious about the WAG exhibit? Here's a snap of Femme Assise (or Seated Woman), a 1927 piece. I have a few more photos on my Instagram.

I was pumped to have actually seen the piece The Young Ladies of Avignon at The Museum of Modern Art in our trip to New York. It's a shockingly huge piece!

I have to say that I can't go home without a souvenir from an art gallery - even if it's just a (very overpriced) magnet or bookmark. I may as well as hand over my wallet.

#BookmarkMonday: Happy 20 years, #HarryPotter!

Can you believe it's been 20 years since JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter? I can't. Nor can I believe that my daughter grew up on this series. Two years, I wrote about my nostalgia of finishing off the last Harry Potter movie - I waxed poetic then and now, here I am again.

This series opened up the wonders of reading to a new generation of readers. We're all the better for it. Alohomora ... indeed! (My two versions in dip pen calligraphy - which do you like better?)

Thank you, JK Rowling!

#BookmarkMonday: Nostalgia (and a hedgehog and a bunny)

I chanced upon by The Elegance of a Hedgehog in my piles of books and suddenly felt a wave of nostalgia, remembering how much I loved it. I read this after a long blogging hiatus and it struck a chord in me with it's simple messages of friendship. Check out my review here.

I decided that it was the perfect thing to show off my blue bunny bookmark, a gift from one of my nieces (she knew I liked kawaii).  I think he looks quite cute with his head poking out. And now, I'm missing my niece.

Do you get all emotional seeing old books and old bookmarks?

About The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery*: We are in the center of Paris, in an elegant apartment building inhabited by bourgeois families. Renée, the concierge, is witness to the lavish but vacuous lives of her numerous employers. Outwardly she conforms to every stereotype of the concierge: fat, cantankerous, addicted to television. Yet, unbeknownst to her employers, Renée is a cultured autodidact who adores art, philosophy, music, and Japanese culture. With humor and intelligence she scrutinizes the lives of the building's tenants, who for their part are barely aware of her existence.

Then there's Paloma, a twelve-year-old genius. She is the daughter of a tedious parliamentarian, a talented and startlingly lucid child who has decided to end her life on the sixteenth of June, her thirteenth birthday. Until then she will continue behaving as everyone expects her to behave: a mediocre pre-teen high on adolescent subculture, a good but not an outstanding student, an obedient if obstinate daughter.

Paloma and Renée hide both their true talents and their finest qualities from a world they suspect cannot or will not appreciate them. They discover their kindred souls when a wealthy Japanese man named Ozu arrives in the building. Only he is able to gain Paloma's trust and to see through Renée's timeworn disguise to the secret that haunts her. This is a moving, funny, triumphant novel that exalts the quiet victories of the inconspicuous among us.

#BookmarkMonday: Neil Gaiman, leather and calligraphy!

I just started reading Neil Gaiman's new book – non-fiction!!! – The View from the Cheap Seats: Selected Non-Fiction*. I got this late for a TLC Book Tour but am reading it nonetheless because of course, this is Neil Gaiman. As a bookmark, I have an old leather tag from an bag I bought. I have a hard time tossing away product tags when so much thought obviously went into them.

On another note, I've been caught up in a new-old hobby, calligraphy, and haven't been blogging as much as I'd like. I am getting those creative juices going again. If you'd like to sneak a peek, check out my Instagram account titik.at.tinta. Here's a sample:

#BookmarkMonday: Summer, Agatha Christie and watermelon!

Another of Frida Kahlo's artworks in a post-it makes it again this week as a bookmark. This week it's all about summer ... and I can't think of anything summery than watermelon! I'm in the backyard taking in some sun and some Agatha Christie.*

What are you up to today?

About The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie:* There's a serial killer on the loose, bent on working his way through the alphabet. And as a macabre calling card he leaves beside each victim's corpe the ABC Railway Guide open at the name of the town where the murder has taken place. Having begun with Andover, Bexhill and then Churston, there seems little chance of the murderer being caught - until he makes the crucial and vain mistake of challenging Hercule Poirot to frustrate his plans.
