It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

My meme life seems to be picking up again. I always enjoy finding new reads via Sheila's meme, It's Monday! What Are You Reading? so I thought I'd throw in my reading fare for this week.

Recently reviewed: 

  • This is Paradise: Stories by Kristiana Kahakauwila - totally loved this collection of short stories about the "real" Hawaii. I also have a GIVEAWAY for this one right now, so be sure to check it out! 
  • And the Soft Wind Blows by Lance Umenhofer - a novella on a man's mid-life crisis ... a little different because of its poetic prose. 
  • Loteria by Mario Alberto Zambrano - This one really affected me. It's a young girl recounting domestic violence within her own home using Loteria cards as prompts. 
  • The Chatswood Spooks by Nottie Thistledore - what a riot! This is great bedtime reading for those with young kids!
  • I haven't posted in ages, so if you're curious, check out my running list of reviews.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?


It's Monday! What Are You Reading? As you can see my reviewing pace is picking up a bit. I'm still trying to finish off reviews for 2012! Latest reviews include quite a range, don't you think?

  • Hollywood Buckaroo by Tracy DeBrincat - contemporary fiction, a riproaring read with a surprisingly tender side to it.
  • The Book of Madness and Cures by Regina O'Melveny - a historical fiction piece about a woman doctor in the 1600s
  • The Marriage Mistake by Jennifer Probst - a chick lit-erotica read
  • I still have a few more before I can wipe 2012 reviews off the list of things to do :)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?


I've fallen off the cart. But I'm hopping back on! I've read a few books since the last time I was online, but my reviewing pace is dismal. Not to worry, they're coming, they're coming!

This January, I read:
  • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, a beautifully descriptive book that I read rather slowly -- ahh magic, the circus, and a love story. What's not to like?
  • The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap by Paulette Mahurin, how a national issue can impact on a small town. With its incisive look at small-town communication (read: gossip) and dynamics, this is quite the rocker. [Check out: Friday 56/Book Beginnings and it's author's guest post]

I am still reading The Little Book of Heartbreak by Meghan Laslocky and am finding love and heartache quite ... entertaining. Check out my Friday 56/Book Beginnings post.

It's Monday! What are you reading?

Ah, Monday, Monday! Did you check out my new round-up of Movember-themed bookmarks yet? You better! I think mustaches are quite fun (probably because I'm not the one growing one)! :)

The past week has been busy on all fronts. But thankfully I finally got a little caught up with my reviews! 

I've read:
Memoirs of a Imaginary Friend by Matthew Dicks
This is such a sweet and unusual read, I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did!


I've reviewed:


Black Boogiemen by Tallis Piaget
An intense read about instigating change in black America.

Eight Girls Taking Pictures by Whitney Otto
I'm sort of in love with this one. One of my favourite reads for the year!

I am wrapping up:
Keeping Score by Marc Brackett
Wait for the review this week! This relationship quiz book is so much fun!

I've started and stopped this one so many times I am embarrassed to admit it. I won this in a giveaway and even did a Friday 56/Book Beginnings post way back in June. Now I am actually reading it, I wonder why I got so distracted. I'm liking it so far!


Mailbox Monday
The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap by Paulette Mahurin

I haven't had any new books lately. But I did get a PDF* for this one because I found the synopsis so intriguing. It deals with the impact of Oscar Wilde's conviction on a small town in Nevada. I was also having quite some fun chatting with the author over email on this one!

It's Monday! What are you reading?

What a strange week. Aside from the two feet of snow, I've actually gotten some reading done. As for posting reviews, that's another story! I really need to get caught up here.

So here's the past week:


 

I Reviewed: I'll Seize the Day Tomorrow by Jonathan Goldstein. Recommended! Really funny!

 I Read: I finished two books ... potentially very controversial. Both authors tackle religion and race, two things that most people would steer clear of in everyday conversation.


 

I'm Currently Reading: 
  • Keeping Score by Marc Brackett. I'm actually done but since this is a quiz book about relationships, it isn't exactly a straight read. This has me laughing throughout ...
  • Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend by Matthew Dicks. I will feature this on Friday. I've read chapter one, which is one page long. Pat me on the back :) Actually I am really excited to start this!
Nothing new in the mail, which is fine. I have more than enough reading material on my hands!

I've had a recent flood of books (evidence: past post) and I've neglected to mention just one new book in the house. I won Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend by Matthew Dicks in yet another giveaway and recently, I was thrilled to see this among the popular nominees in Goodreads Choice Awards. I really luck out on those giveaways!

I have a few more reviews to churn out before I'm totally caught up. Though I did put up my thoughts about The Curiosity of School by Zander Sherman as Id had that on the backburner for ages because I didn't quite finish the book. But thought to get the review out sooner rather than letting it languish in half-finishedness (if that's even a word!)




I was hoping to get two books read last week but it didn't pan out. 

I actually made short work of Colin Fischer and really enjoyed it. Touted to be like The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night Time as the main character, Colin, has Asperger's syndrome ... but it only vaguely reminded me of it. It has a very personal touch, and we even get a peek into Colin's diary entries.

I'm starting with Tallis Piaget's Black Boogiemen this week. I am mentally preparing myself for this one because it seems like a very intense read. I don't know if I'm up for intense reading at the moment. But let's see. Usually a few pages in, I can get pretty engrossed.

This is now my third Monday meme. Why do I do this to myself? :) I am thinking of rolling this up with Mailbox Monday next time I join in, hopefully to keep me on track.
