Fall @Bloggiesta comes to a close ... not bad, could be better :)

  • Monday, September 19, 2016

Bloggiesta is a blogging marathon revolving around ticking off those items on your to-do list and improving your blog while in the good company of other awesome bloggers doing the same thing.

Ok, so it's over. My uber simple list got a little done. But hey, I'll keep trying!
  • Back up my blog and Read the Nobels. - Yes and yes. And my templates too!
  • Get one review published. - Nada. I'll keep trying.
  • Update my Book Map with old and recent reads.  - Funnily, I'm up to date. I also hosted the mini challenge for this and hoping those of you who joined in will link up HERE.
  • Join in one Twitter chat.   - I joined the last one, yay!

Three out of four - not bad, in my books.

So, how did your Bloggiesta go?

Time to get in on the Fall @Bloggiesta!

Bloggiesta is a blogging marathon revolving around ticking off those items on your to-do list and improving your blog while in the good company of other awesome bloggers doing the same thing.

Our awesome mascot Pedro (Plan. Edit. Develop. Review. Organize) is ready to break out the nachos, enchiladas, drinks, mariachi music and whack a pinata or two! It’s nothing short of an awesome fiesta!

I think I need a few mojitos ...

Fall has crept up on me and Im so far behind on things that I really really really need this Bloggiesta. As I'm behind, the list is simple:
  • Back up my blog and Read the Nobels
  • Get ONE review published! I have languishing ones in draft, so one that hits the public eye would make me very happy.
  • Update my Book Map with old and recent reads. (P.S. I'm hosting a mini challenge and you can make your own book map, easy peasy, I promise you! Go check it out here.)
  • Join in at least one Twitter chat.

Make your own #BookMap Mini Challenge! @Bloggiesta (reprised)

  • Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Book maps are such an easy way to keep track of reads! Take a look at my book map (which I absolutely love to just browse and click around):

My book map features books I've read based on setting (with their covers, of course!) and whether it's fiction (red) or non-fiction (green) and Nobel Prize winners (red star). I've also separated them out by the year I read them.

Ready to make your own?

This Bloggiesta, make your own book map! This tutorial comes in two parts. Block off a few hours of time and you can come up with a basic book map with Google Maps.

PART 1
Plan and create your book map
Start mapping your reads

PART 2
Tweak your book map
Embed your book map on your blog

Already have a map?

Then it's time to update! Get caught up in mapping your reads. Or maybe consider adding another dimension to your map -- adding by author country, or categorizing by fiction/non-fiction with the icons. Oh, the possibilities!

Need some inspiration?

This is an old challenge, reprised, and so inspiration abounds within the community:

  • Check out Travel the World in Books readathon participants' maps in THIS POST.
  • This was a Bloggiesta Mini Challenge in 2014. Check out THIS POST.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post them in the comments below as there are quite a number of us who've done this already and we can figure things out pretty quickly!

Link up!

Officially join in this mini challenge and show off your book maps to others. Simply link up your book map below at the end of Bloggiesta! Sorry folks but no prizes for this challenge. Let's simply help each other out -- wonderful prize in itself :)

Happy mapping! Ole!

Doublecounting the fruits of my labour (err, mojitos) for #Bloggiesta & #Reviewathon

Bloggiesta is a blogging marathon revolving around ticking off those items on your to-do list and improving your blog while in the good company of other awesome bloggers doing the same thing.

The mojito actually happened and who the hell cares it it's a wrong country?

My simple list got some love, but probably not enough. I swear, it was the mojitos doing most of the work.
  • Back up my blog and Read the Nobels. - yes and yes, including my templates
  • Get up-to-date with my reviews. I'm already participating in #Reviewathon so I figured doublecounting is totally acceptable. (I tell 'ya, it is.) - far from it. I finished two reviews: one was for Call the Midwife (a Netflix series based on a book which I loved to death) and a niggling one for Read the Nobels - Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Memories of My Melancholy Whores
  • Update my Book Map with old and recent reads.  - nothing to see here folks.
  • Join in the Twitter chat, if my weekend turns out as I plan. - dang, I missed it ... by 3 hours
My lukewarm review of a favourite author.

Et voila! That's was it. Not much but a little goes a long way!

How did your Bloggiesta go?

Mini summer #Bloggiesta! Gotta get 'er done ;)

I need a mojito ... wait, wrong country.

So it's summer. Unbelievable. And it's time for a mini #Bloggiesta! My handy dandy Masterlist gets pulled up again. Since this is mini, I'm keeping this as simple as possible:
  • Back up my blog and Read the Nobels
  • Get up-to-date with my reviews. I'm already participating in #Reviewathon so I figured doublecounting is totally acceptable. (I tell 'ya, it is.)
  • Update my Book Map with old and recent reads.

Et voila! That's it.

Are you joining in this weekend?

Spring #Bloggiesta wrap up! + the #WINNER of @luvlymarket giveaway!

As always, I can never believe it when Bloggiesta rolls to a close. My week did not go as planned and so I didn't get much done. But I've always been kind to myself as life tends to happen ;)

I also encountered some issues with Disqus, my commenting system. While the commenting interface was visible, all my comments had disappeared! I semi-panicked but eventually got things working again. Now experiencing this has raised some red flags in my mind, so I will need to look into this further.

... and the winner is ...

First off, let me thank everyone who join in the mini challenge I hosted, I Need/Can Help Mini Challenge. There were 4 people who asked for help (and one of them was me) so I was a little disappointed that not very many people decided to participate. This was a bit of an experiment to begin with so I'm not sure how this can be tweaked for the next time (or if there ever is one).

However, despite the few participants asking for help, there were tons of you who hopped around to give advice. Thank you to all the advice-givers! You rocked our blogs!

For example, my own cry of help "I need help with my email subscription" gave me some extremely valuable information. I got a great response which will feed into (or confirmed) some of my decisions on what I want to do next!

... and now, let's get to the winner:

Congrats, Perusing Princesses, you won this amazing Spring Mega-Bundle from Luvly.co.*

Here's what I did get done during my Bloggiesta week:

Regular clean-up

✔ Back up my blog. Done. I also backed-up Read the Nobels. As always I backed up everything on Google Drive.

✔ Back up my template. Yup. Just do this in tandem with above = peace of mind.

Get up-to-date with my reviews. Not this time.

Update my Book Map with old and recent reads. Nope.

Clean up wonky posts. Nope. Although I do this on a regular basis anyway when I do see something.

Read new Bloggiesta posts.

✔ Join mini challenges that I think are fun and useful.

I am lumping this and the previous bullet together. I didn't get through very many this Bloggiesta posts or challenges, unfortunately. Although I encountered are quite a few new bloggers out there and I love discovering them through Bloggiesta!
  • I am now part of a Blogging Mastermind Group (courtesy of Stacy at a Novel Life)! I'm pretty excited about this one!
  • I learned about Litsy through Jenni at Jenni Elyse. Problem is I'm not a mobile phone user so I sigh a little when a new apps come out.
  • I found out about Libib through Katrina at Bookish Things and More. I am considering bringing in my Goodreads lists here since Libib libraries can also be created for music and movies! One place for everything!

✔ Host a mini-challenge. Done.

✔ Host a giveaway
. Done.

Check out the Twitter feed for #bloggiesta and participate in at least one Twitter chat.
I was able to join one chat and thoroughly enjoyed it! I think I am finally getting the hang of it!

So tell me ... how was your Bloggiesta? Are you looking forward to the next one?

#Bloggiesta: I NEED help with my Email Subscription

  • Monday, March 21, 2016

How's your Bloggiesta coming along?

For those who have email subscriptions or email newsletters, I need your two (or more) cents. Here's my little conundrum: I have a hard time growing my email list.

As a sidenote, I personally have trimmed down my own email subscriptions because of the sheer volume of emails that make it into my email box. So I definitely know what it's like to be on the receiving end of email lists!

I'm contemplating a few things and I'm wondering if I should take the leap, since setting everything up takes so much time!

Here's where I'm at:
  • I have an RSS-driven Email subscription, in other words, when a new post goes up, an email automatically goes out.
  • I use MailChimp.
  • It's integrated on my blog in the right sidebar, at the end of the post, and as a pop-up (which I turn off sometimes to be less annoying!)

Give me some advice on my "big" questions about my email subscription option:
  1. What do you personally prefer - a daily email or a weekly email?
  2. Should I just do away with the RSS subscription and focus on putting together a weekly newsletter picking out only the best of my best content? I know this is going to be a lot more work, but hey, I'd prefer to be read rather than be lazy.
  3. What makes you stay subscribed on someone's email list? Do regular freebies, giveaways, promo codes appeal to you? What other type of content makes you stay?
  4. Any tips, suggestions or good reads related to email subscriptions? The more I read, the better!
I'd love to hear from you so I can start ship-shaping up my email subscription changes.  Thanks in advance :)

Well it was mini! I'm wrapping up my @Bloggiesta + find out who won Inbox Zero mini challenge!

Can you believe it? This year's mini Winter Bloggiesta has come and gone once again!

Who won? (I know you wanna know, so I'm doing this first!)

I love it when a mini challenge actually is useful to someone ... or in this case someones. With the Inbox Zero mini challenge, six brave souls decided to have a go at their inboxes and I am pumped that the mini challenge spurred some action and resulted in some cleaner Inboxes!

Carey at Carey Reads not only got to Inbox Zero on her blog email (which is Gmail), she also decided to tackle her work email! He work email is Outlook so she's taken what she can take from the tutorial and Outlook-ified it.

Emily at Emily Reads Everything had already set up her system last year, but she needed to get some filing done. And done it is ... all 120 emails!

Tressa at Wishful Endings adapted the tutorial for her Outlook account and she's pared down her 2000+ emails to 10, which she responded to right away... and that makes ZERO.

Andi at Estella's Revenge seemed such a "slacker" (hear my voice dripping with loving sarcasm). She said:
Tanya at Mom's Small Victories says she cleaned out 6000 emails. Amazing! But OMG wait, she is still at it with the 11,000 remaining. Chin up, Tanya, you can do it!

Stacy at The Novel Life tried Unroll.me to unsubscribe from over 200+ subscriptions, and she got fantastic results:

For those of you who started but never got around to linking up, that's ok too. I know that this is a work-in-progress so the real test is using the system for a few months, and of course tweaking and further customizing it to work for you.

I had a hard time deciding who won, so I left it totally to chance, the old fashioned way, using my "see no evil, hear no eveil, speak no evil" tea cup ...

And now, the winner of $10 worth of digital pretties from luvly.co is ... drumroll please .... Congrats, CAREY!!!

Regular clean-up

Back up my blog. Done. I also backed-up Read the Nobels. I am making it a habit to upload the xml files on Google Drive instead of just keeping it on my hard drive.

Back up my template. A new addition to this list - I was in the back-end of Blogger anyway, so I grabbed the code of my template and uploaded it on Google Drive.

Get up-to-date with my reviews. Ay yay yay. This is a mini Bloggiesta so, this doesn't count :) I did manage to finish one (of many) reviews I had to do - go check out my review of the heartwrenching Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay.

Update my
Book Map with old and recent reads.  I`m up to date but I did a bit of cleaning up and I started alphabetizing the book titles and dividing the map layers up by year.

Clean up wonky posts.

I cleaned a few up again - uploaded a few images that weren't appearing, took down a few old posts with dead links. Definitely one of those ongoing things to just keep doing.

Read new Bloggiesta posts. I visited a few blogs linked up and left comments here and there. I was supposed to discover 10 new blogs but I was away (unplanned) for most of Saturday and Sunday and didn't have as much time as I'd like. Oh well, there is always a next time!

Join mini challenges that I think are fun and useful.  I wanted to do them all, especially the bullet journalling one by Emily Reads Everything, but got to only two:
  • Clean your Gmail. Yeah, yeah, I know this is my challenge. I'm set up already and am at Inbox Zero. However I did action a few of my Action Items.
  • Keeping Your Info Private (by Tasha from Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Books) - Fantastic post that I read through. I think this topic merits some more thought and maybe some checklists in the future.

A miracle! I made it to the Twitter chat and it was so much fun connecting with your lovely folks. I've followed quite a number of new people (or for some odd reason, bloggers I knew but weren't following). I still have to get the hang of the whole Q1 A1 tagging ... and trying to answer all the individual comments .... ahh, but one Twitter chat at a time!

I got distracted on the weekend so not everything got checked off. But overall, another productive Bloggiesta and I know that I've got plenty more to do in the next week-long one.

How was your Bloggiesta?

Winter Mini #Bloggiesta Mini Challenge: Clean up your Gmail!

Sometime mid-2015 I faced my Gmail and was sick and tired of the thousands of emails sitting in my inbox. It was getting harder to ignore it. And I was in semi-denial that it was a problem. I decided to do something about it. All I was wanted was to be able to maintain a respectably clean inbox.

But ... I not only managed to do that, I (in total disbelief, may I add) managed to get down to Inbox Zero! I'm happy to report that since mid last year, I have whipped this Gmail monster into shape and I am still at Inbox Zero!

I decided to share my experience last Bloggiesta. I created a tutorial on how I set up my Gmail account and so many of you took on the challenge. And here's another testimonial (aside from mine):
A few have asked whether this challenge could be offered again ... so here it is!

Take the challenge: Towards Inbox Zero!

  1. Visit the Tutorial: click HERE
  2. Use whatever tips or tricks you can from the tutorial and do what feels comfortable for you towards getting your email under control, towards Inbox Zero. Whether you take only one step, or decide to convert over to the set-up that I have, I'd love to hear about it!
  3. Write a post on youe blog and share your experience. Take screen caps, if you must!
  4. Now for the GIVEAWAY! The prize: $10 worth of digital goodies from Luvly.co. (*Need some ideas on what to get - check this post!)

Link up your completion post in the Linky below and please, pretty please, leave a comment below. I'll pick a winner and announce here.

Because it's a holiday on Monday for some, the DEADLINE for linking up is January 19, Tuesday, noon!
Easy peasy, right?

Now go do some serious inbox whooping. I pretty much guarantee you'll feel pretty darn good!

Gonna get warm this Winter Mini Bloggiesta! Ole!

Get inspired by fellow book bloggers cleaning up their blogs and their to-do lists... you're not alone. Check out this link if you want to sign up!

A mini challenge + giveaway, rebooted!

Last Fall, I urged Gmail users to get to Inbox Zero in a  mini challenge. I'm rehosting it this Winter as clean inboxes are a wonderful thing, especially in the new year. I'll be posting the details of the mini challenge soon.

In the meantime, check out the Tutorial and start thinking about whether you want to join in!

My goals for Winter 2016 Mini Bloggiesta

I'm pretty happy that I have already moved over to my new template and changed up my logo. I already feel the breeze back in my blog!

I'm referring back to my Masterlist and will try to get as many of the general housekeeping items done.

Focus for this Bloggiesta: I'll visit at least 5 new blogs each day for a total of 10 blogs to discover. Sounds exciting!

See you January 16! Remember: good luck, have fun, and be kind to yourself!

Fall #Bloggiesta ... done and done! (+ who won the Inbox Zero mini challenge)

Well, wasn't that fun? Fall Bloggiesta has come and gone once again and I'm chuffed! I got quite a bit done this time around and it's always fun just hanging out with everyone! Thanks to the organizers of Bloggiesta and the always-enthusiastic partipants, we've got another Bloggiesta under our belts!

The big stuff

Inbox Zero mini challenge and giveaway. A few months ago I came across a life-changing email  (yes, I am being dramatic for good reason) and I finally achieved Inbox Zero. I decided it would be great to share the experience and cooked up a mini challenge.

Gauging by the response, many bloggers seem to struggle to tame their inboxes. Congrats to everyone who joined in, who commented, and even shared screen caps of their Inbox Zero (you gotta see it to believe it - check out the comments!)

And now, the winner of $10 worth of digital pretties from luvly.co is ... drumroll please ... Emily Reads Everything. Congrats, Emily!

Blog template overhaul. The week before Bloggiesta, my blog was in a weird state for a bit and I had a transition template that I only just *sort* of liked. I finally decided to just bite the bullet. I'd been stressing about how complicated my navigation was, the state of my overlabeling, the cluttered sidebars (I could go on) ...  and felt I needed a change. It actually feels like a breeze just blew away all this extraneous stuff with my new template. My red-flowered elephant isn't up yet, but makes an appearance in the blog posts. I'm still fiddling with stuff (as always) so you'll see a few tweaks here and there.

Regular clean-up

Back up my blog. Done. Even better I also backed-up another blog I manage. I took one extra step this time around and uploaded the xml files on Google drive instead of just keeping it on my hard drive. Again, I have to say it to every book blogger: do this every Bloggiesta! It doesn't take too long and it gives you just a little bit more peace of mind.

Get up-to-date with my reviews. I knew this wasn't happening, for this Bloggiesta at least, so I didn't fight it. I did finish one review for an upcoming tour though!

Update my
Book Map with old and recent reads.  Done. And only because I've been reading/reviewing far less that it makes it easy to keep up with it.

Clean up wonky posts.

I got a few out of the way, which I just do when I'm prowling around on the blog. I've also decided to delete Amazon as an affiliate (not making anything anyway) and just stick to Book Depository (because that's what I use to buy books online). Plus it's one less thing to link in the future.

Read new Bloggiesta posts. I did a fair bit of roaming around and left comments here and there but felt like I still didn't get to visit everyone! There was so much going on! I couldn't make any of the Twitter chats so I loved that the chats were all summarized on the Bloggiesta blog.

Join mini challenges that I think are fun and useful. Now call me an overachiever; I got 3 mini challenges done.
Optional:
Host a mini-challenge.
Host a giveaway.
Check out the Twitter feed for #bloggiesta and participate in at least one Twitter chat. (See above)

Lastly, I'll be updating my Masterlist and will be planning my next Bloggiesta to-do list. Ole!

#Bloggiesta Challenge + #Giveaway: Gmail Users! How I Achieved Inbox Zero & You Can Too!

Does opening up email make you smile? It should, right? After all, it means someone is getting in touch with you.

I can now, honestly say I now do (smile)! Although it wasn't too long ago when the simple act of opening up email filled me with dread. I was sick of having to look at an inbox that had thousands of unopened, unread, and unactioned emails.

As a book blogger, staying on top of email is essential. Review requests, tour information, ad requests, event information, affiliate emails and more make their way into your mailbox. Many of these emails demand that you action them.

For Fall Bloggiesta, I am sharing with you some tips that have worked for me over the long haul. I have struggled with email overwhelm for years and have tried many tips, apps and set ups. The set-up below is tailored for my book blogger's email but I also use the same set-up for my personal email,

Disclaimer: This is what works for me, so please take everything with a grain of salt. People do things in different ways so what works for me may not necessarily work for you. I can only share my own personal experience. Do what feels right for you!

Take the Challenge: Towards Inbox Zero!
Use whatever tips or tricks you can from this post and leave me a comment on what you're doing towards getting your email under control, towards Inbox Zero. Whether you take only one step, or decide to convert over to the set-up that I have, I'd love to hear about it!

Now for the GIVEAWAY! (this giveaway has ended)
The prize: $10 worth of digital goodies from Luvly.co.

This is simple: I'll pick one comment that I personally found inspiring or interesting.

Should you be the lucky winner, make sure I can contact you: please FILL OUT THIS FORM.

Note: While many of the tips here work for email in general, the clincher email set-up at the end works only for Gmail.

First things first: Unsubscribe from anything you don't actually read or use

Can you believe I had 208 subscriptions! Insane, right? I was shocked when I saw the number too! I signed up for store alerts, Goodreads alerts, a bundle of blogger email subscriptions, and more. My reasoning: I'll get to them eventually. Of course I never did. Now, I am only subscribed to a handful - the ones that I actually read.

Remember: The less email that comes in, the less you have to deal with.

Going forward, resist the urge to keep signing up. Sign up only to alerts and subscriptions that you'd actually take the time to open and read.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW:
Unsubscribe from anything you've never opened (like all those subscriptions so you get an extra entry in a giveaway ehem). Pick and choose what you can unsubscribe from on Goodreads (all the alerts on Goodreads). And yes -- I have to say it -- unsubscribe from all those blog subscriptions you don't read (besides, that's what feed readers like Bloglovin is for). Is this too much for you? I used unroll.me to identify and unsubscribe. Go try it here: unroll.me.

My Tip: Having a hard time unsubscribing? If you haven't read any of the last 5 emails from that subscription, unsubscribe. Do it. If you start missing it in your email box, it only takes two shakes to resubscribe.

Your Inspiration: My Inbox Zero

As of this morning, I have Inbox Zero, i.e. zero emails in my inbox. Impossible? The proof of the pudding:

How I set up my Gmail so I can deal efficiently with email

At the end of this post, I will share how I set up my Gmail so it looks like the screen cap above. I don't claim any credit for this set up which I have shamelessly borrowed from Andreas Klingas' post entitled "Don't drown in email: How to use Gmail more efficiently" (he in turn credits it to someone else whose post link is long gone). However, I have modified things to work for me as a book blogger.

Here's the set up:
  • Principle in action: Getting Things Done (read more about GTD)
  • Inbox on left (currently zero!)
  • On the right, I have these sections or panes:
    1st section: Needs Action/Reply (To Do's)
    2nd section: Awaiting Reply
    3rd section: Reference
4th section: Book Reviews that are pending
I am a very visual person, so if I don't see it, it's highly likely that I'll forget about it. This system allows me to see everything in one glance, as well as mark items that I need to quickly so I don't need to search around every time.

How I manage my email daily, i.e. the lowdown on how this system works for me

I get anywhere between nothing (rare) to even 50+ (!) in a day related to book blogging. This morning, I opened up my email to 17 new messages. I dealt with everything in under 10 minutes, including responding to several emails and even getting a new ad up.

1. Open up Gmail.
2. In the Inbox (lefthand side), I handle the emails I can deal with NOW
  • Delete any emails I don't need or want (SPAM yo).
  • Respond to any emails that can easily be responded to (then I click "Archive" so it disappears from my Inbox, and/or I mark it with a purple question markif I am expecting still expect a reply to that email)

3. For emails I can't deal with NOW, I mark accordingly
(then click "Archive" so it disappears from my Inbox):

Red bang - Emails that need to be dealt with because they're timebound. For example, I have an email from Creative Market which provides free downloadables every week; the downloads expire after a week, so if I miss it, oh well.

Yellow
bang  - Emails needing action, less priority. These usually have deadlines that are further down the road like an event or a book tour. Many of these things you can actually unmark after you've entered into your calendar.

Yellow star - Any email which I'm bookmarking for future reading or future reference. Emails that fall into these category for me are my email subscriptions. When I've read it or done with the email, I remove the yellow star so it doesn't clutter up my email.

Orange guillemet  -  I take special care to make sure I have emails related to book reviews marked and easy to get back to. I unmark the email when I've emailed the requestor with the link to the review.

4. When there's downtime, usually evenings and weekends, I deal with the items in the righthand section so it doesn't build up.

The goal is to ensure that all Inbox items are actioned and therefore empty at the end of each day. Simple, right?

Ready for the next BIG step?
Here's a step-by-step guide to setting up your Gmail

Remember:
  • This works only for Gmail. No special plugins are needed. Just Gmail.
  • This takes about 15 minutes to set up. (It'll be the best 15 minutes of your email existence if this works for you ;) )
  • This set-up has helped me manage my email and I've been practically Inbox Zero for several months now!

1. Enable Multiple Inboxes
  • Click the Cogs icon on the top right
  • Go to Settings
  • Go to Labs
  • Enable Multiple Inboxes
  • Choose right side layout

2. Choose your Stars (or icons)

  • Go to Settings - General
  • Scroll down to Stars (a little past mid-page)
  • Add the stars you want to use
I use the following:

Red bang for Important To Do
Yellow bang for To Do
Question mark for emails I expect or await a reply
Yellow star for future reading or future reference
Orange guillemet for pending book reviews

Tips:

  • Decide what stars/icons are intuitive for you.
  • Don't over-organize. Limit your stars/icons to the most essential tasks in your own workflow. Limit the number of panes you create (the max. is 5 anyway). If you have to remember too many icons or panes, it's likely you won't use them.

3. Set up Filters so your Inboxes correspond to your Stars (icons)

  • Go to Settings - Multiple Inboxes
  • Choose "Right side of the inbox" (this is at the very bottom)
  • Add the filter rules you want for your inboxes
  • Click "Save changes"

For reference, here are the names of the stars (just cut-and-paste in the fields):

  • has:red-star
  • has:orange-star
  • has:green-star
  • has:blue-star
  • has:purple-star
  • has:red-bang
  • has:orange-guillemet
  • has:yellow-bang
  • has:green-check
  • has:blue-info
  • has:purple-question

4. Enable the Inbox layout

Warning: This step disables the tabs feature which is a relatively new feature of Gmail. If you're wedded to tabs, STOP RIGHT HERE because I will not be held responsible for causing Gmail heartache.

Here are the tabs - they will disappear. (Honestly, my heart sort of clenched when I got to this stage because I was worried I'd make a mess of Gmail.)

  • Go to Settings - Inbox
  • Choose “Default”  for "Inbox type"
  • Turn off any configuration for tabs (Have only "Primary" checked off)
  • Turn off any configuration for Importance markers ("No markers") and Filtered mail ("Don't override filters")
  • Go to Inbox
  • Click on the Cogs icon
  • Check off "Compact"
  • Click "Configure inbox"
  • Uncheck everything except for "Primary"
  • RELOAD your Gmail.
You got this far! You're almost there ...

Now, it's time to get to Inbox Zero

After reloading, your email should be all divided up into the different sections or panes that I shared with you in my inspiration screen shot. The exception: your Inbox is probably full ... like in the hundreds or even thousands.

Don't panic. This is where the fun begins!

Bookish sidenote: I can't help but liken this last step to Marie Kondo's principle where it is essential to tidy in one fell swoop. This last step is essential and is the so-called "fell swoop." Once your email is down to zero, you'll want to keep it that way. (Check out Kondo's book The Life- Changing Magic of Tidying Up).

1. For the first two or three pages of email:
  • Mark everything that is a To Do with your To do star/icon (for me, it's a red or yellow bang).
  • Mark every thread where you were the last to email and are awaiting a reply with your Awaiting Reply star/icon (for me it's a purple question mark).
  • Mark up your emails to correspond to your designated actions.

2. Still think there is important stuff? Continue marking up the fourth page of emails. Stop until you feel that there is nothing important to mark.

I personally stopped midway through the third page. Most were stale emails anyway.

3. Now, breathe.

4. Check"All" (the dropdown Checkbox on the top left).
5. Confirm. Yes, you really are going to click on Archive.

6. Voila! Your Inbox is now at Zero. Your right side is probably full.

So, how do you feel?

I personally felt like a huge load had been lifted when I got to this point.

Now, go forth and do a little jig!

Maintaining Inbox Zero

The ultimate test is to use the set-up over a long period of time, a month to a few months. I have been able to maintain my account like this for several months already and have not had any issues with email build up.

  • Hover your mouse over the Label list.
  • At the bottom of your Label list, click More (you may need to scroll down).
